Hope you don’t mind all of my questions. Reading all of your books now.

Problem 71. Why not 8/5 for three of the 1s to put 3 builders in the 2 and 3 point? I guess either 5/4 or 18/17 for the last 1. (If you actually did my move what would you do with the last 1).

Too much risk not duplicating the lone blot? Would think take the small chance and having 3 builders.

No problem with good questions. Keep them coming.

The key to deciding whether you want to play safe or take some risk is your opponent's home board. If it's very strong (as here) you play as safe as you can to cut down on your opponent's immediate game-winning shots. Playing 8/7 18/15 leaves 3 shots (32 and 33) while 8/4 leaves 6 shots (36, 26, 33, and 22).

If White's board were weaker (maybe two points or three points) then your play might be right.
