What is your play and why?

After an early 6-1 making the bar, the standard play with 2-1 is to make the 5-point. I'd make that play here as the only alternative is 11/8, which doesn't give Black much. With the 3-point already made, getting the 5-point puts Black on the verge of a double if White can't hit.

So, even despite the fact that we have a huge race lead, have less checkers back (= safe vs bold) we do that pretty much automatically?

Here is one similar decision:

White - Pips 146

Black - Pips 133

Would you play the same in both positions or not and why?

In the first position Xtreme Gammon recommended 7/5 6/5. For the second it recommended 23/21 6/7 so it treated them as quite different.

I realize that. My question, of course, is why it is correct to make 5pt in one of those and incorrect in another.

In the second example, you end up with smoother distribution by unstacking the 8 point and putting an extra man on the bar point.
