2-1: First Post

Hey guys, picking up backgammon again after 10 years. Hope I'm posting the image correctly.

White to play 2-1. What's your play?

I would block her escaping 6s with 9/7 8/7.
If she hits we have no trouble entering and hitting back.

I would go with 9/8 5/3. We give up most of the sixes, but at least 62 isn't a game killer anymore. We have a four point board with builders ready if there is no escape, or even if there is an escape.

I don't think we benefit from a tit for tat hitting game; we need to be able to hit and cover on our 3 point. Our two checkers in back aren't going to be boxed in, and they can hit at outfield blots. Getting one more back there is manageable, but two more is very bad.

Good rule of thumb: when you need to do two things to win and you can do either one, do the harder thing first.

We need the 3-point and the 7-point to get real winning chances. Making the 3 is trivially easy, making the 7 is very difficult. So make the 7-point.

Awesome, thanks everyone!

My instinct was 9/8 5/3, but that was a significant error (i think around 0.08). Now that I've started playing a bot, I can see that I have bad instincts on this sort of position.

Thanks for that rule of thumb.
