I'm not saying he can't troll, I'm saying if he does troll(which he is doing) I will treat his thread like a troll thread. Who made you Mod and decided I can't treat a troll like a troll?

I apologise if I led to confusion by posing my question in a confrontational or antagonistic way. It wasn't supposed to be a troll. I was just trying to make it more interesting, I guess.

Some of the abused picketed at the Vatican and were arrested for not having a permit. They spent more time in a police station than many of the abusers.

Pope needs to resign as he allowed the pedphiles to continue.

Catholic church is a disgrace. Though most organized religion is.

Just eliminate the middleman and deal direct with your God

Actually, what I'm trying to understand is not the right/wrongness of the crimes. This is very clear.

What I'm trying to understand is the widespread tolerance towards a crime which normally engenders a much more dramatic response.

Has the public school system said it's all a media conspiracy?

The pope (his handlers?) has made some very terrible judgements.

1. Unexcommunicating, and thus returning a holocaust denier to status of bishop.
2. Statements concerning homosexuality in the vatican.
3. Pressuring England and Ireland on not passing protections concerning homosexuals and women's rights.
4. Attempting to bring charges against an italian comedian who said that there is a special place in hell reserved for the pope.
5. Statements concerning condoms and africa.

and the list goes on.

I have zero respect for the pope. I think he is a horrible human being.

That being said, I have also donated to catholic based charities, such as Father Joe's Villages. http://www.fatherjoesvillages.org/

There are certain catholic charties I wouldn't touch, and others I am quite happy to give money to.

for what it is worth, I am an atheist. I cannot judge these charities based on my views of Ratzinger, but based on the work that they do.

Italian comedian Sabrina Guzzanti is facing possible prosecution and a prison term of five years for making controversial remarks about the pope at an anti-politics rally in Rome.

Guzzanti could be tried for this offense at the hands of Rome’s prosecutor, Giovanni Ferrara. If Ferrara obtains the authorization from the Italian justice minister that he has requested, he will start proceedings against Guzzanti for “vilification” of the pope. Under Italian law, courts are allowed to sentence people to up to five years in prison for “offending the honor” of the pope, the same punishment as offending the honor of the Italian president.

This incident with the comedienne was covered in Penn & Teller's Bullsh*t episode concerning the catholic church. You can find it on youtube.

the pope is a one time nazi , he knew about numerous cases of child sex abuse , his very own brother was in charge of a boys home where over 60 people now claim to have been sexually abused by priests while in their care .

i agree op , when and where is the first protest , put my name down i'll be there.
Over a billion Catholics in the world, they believe they are the 'One True Church' created at Pentecost - Jesus said there would be scandals in the church. He said many would hate us. He also said that 'The gates of hail shall not prevail against it.' In my opinion, the Church will be here until Jesus himself returns.

Does anyone have any statistics as to the % of pedophile priests vs the % of pedophile people in the world?

Personally I would love to see all of this prompt a new theist movement. The sad truth is that it'll probably just mindlessly lead people to atheism.

Stats are hard to come by. Don't want to revisit this in detail, but the meat of the issue isn't the bare rate of abusers, but the extent to which abuse was covered up, known abusers shifted from diocese to diocese, etc. Even if we stipulate that the raw number of abusers is perfectly in line with statistical expectation, the extent to which the Church hierarchy exacerbated the problem is shocking.

they tried to brainwash me with all that same crap too , it obviously did not work on me .

attendances have been in decline for years , while scandals have been rising in the same time.

jebus has been and gone , imo you be better off believing in the flying spaghetti monsters that they talking about in another thread , they have as much chance of being true as any BS you likely to hear being taught to catholic kids.

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/13...thread-401173/

makes as much sense as the church.

Apparently they are not doing anything to prevent such abuse in public schools because it keeps on happening....and happening....and happening....and happening.
How is "they are not doing anything to prevent such abuse" the same as "they systematically have a multi-national cover-up?"
