Lol, perfect meme for this forum.

Sometimes I come here as a debating exercise. Sometimes I'm interested to see what it is that other people actually believe, whether I agree with them or not. Sometimes I like to troll.

it's entertaining to watch theists trying to defend their beliefs...

I was wondering why people post here at all, it seems like two sides shouting at a wall most of the time.

Are the religious trying to win converts?

Are the atheists basically all just this guy?

Does anything constructive ever happen in this subforum?

Just curious.
I'm aware of the stereotype of atheists being people like this, which is why I try to be conscious of how often I bring it up in conversation anymore. I'm well aware that many moderate people view fundamentalists and militant atheists the same way. I never bring this subject up unless I am speaking with close friends, or if someone brings up the topic of religion and asks me my opinion.

At the same time, I am never shy about telling people exactly what I think when they ask me my opinion on these things.

Often the only thing atheists have in common is their view on a god. Other than that, we are spread far across the ideological spectrum, from pinko-commie liberals, to dyed-in-the-wool Ayn Rand Objectivists. Most of my friends are religious to one degree or another. They know my views and I know theirs, and we still occasionally talk about it.

(The pic made me laugh btw )

I post here because of the conversations I've had with posters like Wizard-50 and Aaron W., who put it best in a conversation we have going in another thread:

The civil, meaningful conversations where people actually try to understand each other make the rest of the bull**** tolerable.

I post here because I wish someone had had the balls to say to me "Mate, your beliefs are ****ing stupid". I was never, ever challenged when I'd say things like "well, obviously it's much easier to believe God came from nothing than the universe came from nothing". If someone had I would have become atheist much much earlier.

While I think most of us realize that there are almost no Atheists who will convert yet there are a small amount of the believers who may, it's important to still fight against the illogical in this world. Some people actually benefit from it, and that's important in it's own right.

As always, Hitchens says it best:

I came here because I figured there would be more people who are my definition of intelligent. I wanted to bounce some ideas around that is taboo to talk about in real life, before I brought it up with people irl.

I also wanted to explore the understand that connecting different arguments is the key to solving the worlds problem.

I think people come here because we are bred be addicted to conflict.

Atheist vs Reilgions

Do threads require conflict?

I think atheists and theists are mostly the same.

I also came to see if anyone here had any idea what I was talking about. And to induct time travel.

Yeah, except for that whole "God" thing.

I always enjoyed debating, it seemed to me it was something I was good at. I think its like chess or poker in the sense that winning massages the ego of the person who fancy's themselves intelligent. For me I think I am more curious perhaps insecure in that sense, and it feels like I am acquiring the data (sample size) to see if I am a winning player, so to speak. In the case of religion I debate that subject because I was raised catholic and its one of the subjects I am more qualified/interested in. Plus I am young still and if poker taught me anything its that you should start at the lower stakes and prove your winning before you move up (half joking).
