Why Is It Called Greek "Mythology"? Why Is It Called Greek "Mythology"?

When did this happen? Obviously the people who practiced and believed in this stuff at the time didn't call it mythology. Something must have been falsified somewhere for this Greek religion to have taken on the new name. Or is religion just a popularity contest?

If Christians truly believe in Christianity, why do they not say "Islamic Mythology" or "Buddhist Mythology" when talking about other religions? Is the only difference in terminology decided by whether or not enough people are around to be insulted by it?

I think that it is just because it is no longer practiced. But you are right, I never really thought about it.

I used to be into Greek mythology. It is very interesting stuff.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.

Your link prompted me to search Wikipedia for "Christian Mythology" too. Lo and behold, it was there! I thought we'd have to wait a few hundred years for that entry to appear.

"mythos" is Greek for "story." -ology is (obv) "the study of."

so "greek mythology" is "the study of Greek stories."

of course, you can use mythology when talking about any religious beliefs, but i guess "mythology" has a certain connotation that would suggest that the stories are myths, and not real, which would obv piss off anyone that actually believes the stories.

+1

It's the study of ancient Greek myths, not the ancient Greek religion. Religion includes ritual and practice of some kind.
