One of the things that I have heard over and over is that the reason people have to believe or want to believe in a God is that they are weak and need comfort to cope with life.

I know for a fact that ALL MEN want and need comfort in difficult situations in life.

So I pose this quesiton: If you are not able to turn to God in times of need what do you turn to in times of need for comfort and escape when life gets hard?

Is it drugs, sex, food, money, strong drink?

Humans.

Any particular humans? Mom, Dad, Friend?

friends, family, work, music, books, gym, movies, alcohol etc...

Knowing that all things are temporary and everchanging is a source of comfort in difficult situations.

Some sort of reflection on the wider picture normally does the trick. The thought that it could be worse... things like that.

When the going really gets tough, I'm an avoider. I can put things not quite out of my mind, but in a different place in my mind. It's like the thoughts are there, but I don't think them. I know they do bother me because it takes its toll physically. I don't sleep properly, don't eat right, drink a bit more, get a twitch or two and I just generally don't look after myself as much as normal and become withdrawn. I can think of three times this has happened to me, the worst by far when my Grandma died. It's hard to say why I find it comforting. It's only afterwards that I really see it for what it is, even though at the time I kinda know what is going on, it's sort of grouped under "the thoughts are there, but I don't think them". I don't know whether you can quite call it a dellusion.

I've never felt like I wanted God in these times. Maybe I've just not had it hard enough.

My mind so I can solve the difficult situation

Friends, familiy, myself, musicians, authors etc.

My family.
My brother lives in finland with his wife and kids and I regret I dont see him alot.
My sister and her husband are great persons.
Also they have 3 children wich one of them is my godchild.

Sh lives 2km from me and my parents come every week to my sister on tuesdays.
That day in the week is a day i NEVER skip to visit my sis and parents for a whole day.
A. to see the kids and my godchild
B. to see my sister
C. TO see my parents

Thats also the day I open up any problems / or issues I might had in the previous week.

for example : After my 4,5 year relationship, i was mentally down and they supported me alot in it.
Also visiting my sisters house and the family is a relief and a place like heaven for me.
And thats probably the reason why it comforts me in diff situations.I can speak free and clearly to them with no worries.


I can't say how much I appreciate my family.

Nobody is completely immune from some level of aversion to difficult situations. The fact that you recognize that sometimes you avoid them and that they have physical ramifications is an insight that many have not discovered.

The body reacts more than most people realize to what would conventionally considered non physical stimulus. For example fear can wreak havoc on the body, especially the lower back. The body is quite sensitive to all thoughts and emotions.

By addressing difficult situations and acknowledging how uncomfortable they make us feel allows the physical resistance to eventually dissipate much more than ignoring it and allowing the same discomfort to grow.

Yes, also people I care about.

There is nothing inherently wrong with any of these as long as they are not sought of as an escape and one does not become attached to them.

Remembering how fortunate I really am and being grateful for it, and then realizing that things could always get worse.

Also, whenever I'm really down I usually go to an Asian massage parlor and get a nice massage along with a happy ending. That always makes me feel better about my place in the cosmos.

This is truly a spiritual experience.

Prayer and Music plus thinking about the miracle of life is always comforting.

- Playing hockey
- Friends / Family
- Funny movies

As for the last, I personally require nor specially want any of those in such times. I do get down sometimes, but what I require then is to take the time for a lone walk in the forest, to observe the leaves dart around in the air over the road, to see a sunset or watch the insect life in my garden. Peace and quiet, with a touch of nature's relativism.

Your troubles are trivial in the grand scheme of things... be humbled that you are alive and can experience joy and even pain.

Of course I state this from the comforts of a home and for the most part, a secure life.... I'm even more humbled that I hit the parent/culture/country lottery.
