I like how he keeps putting the word 'church' in quotation marks because he finds their interpretation of the bible disturbing.

Thanks for the clarification.

I wouldn't even call Westboro a church. They act more like a cult.

From the article:

Jon Stewart once said, “The Westboro Baptist Church is no more a church than Church’s Fried Chicken is a church.”
Why does Jon Stewart think it's not a church?

A church is suppose to be building the body of Christ. Not tearing it down.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the Westboro Church is phoney and designed by someone to give Christianity a bad name.

You can't prevent someone from doing a lame impersonation of someone else thereby getting a group a lot of negative press.

Which is, of course, what they are doing based on their interpretation of the Bible.

It's cute that you think there's a difference because you don't agree with their beliefs.

They have a form of the Word imo but it appears like they reversed the order. Instead of the Spirit being above the Word the Word is above the Spirit.

People are the Temple of God. Jesus is the foundation and the bible is the blueprint. Do they look anything like Jesus?

In his book Temple Treasures Stephen Fuson puts it this way: "All foundations and ages were created by the Word - the Logos, the Son. In Him we find fellowship with the two witnesses, as the Spirit and Word become the essential character of our inner man."

Yes, I understand that you interpret the Bible differently than they. What is funny is your not considering them a church because of it.

They're not a church because they're not delivering the Gospel message.

I could call myself the International House of Pancakes but if I'm not serving up pancakes then I'm not who I've advertised myself to be.

It makes sense to me. As an outsider, I understand "church" in sociological terms, as a group of people meeting together around common religious ideas. As a Christian, splendour understands "church" in theological terms, as people who are gathered together to follow the teachings of Jesus.

If they're exempt from taxes, they are a church, amirite?

Yes they are. They are just interpreting it differently than you are.

That's because you don't fit the definition of IHoP (just made an omelette, should have made pancakes, damn you Splendour). But given your definition of church earlier, they are a church. They just teach that the Bible reads differently than how you read it.

That's exactly what they are doing. The objections that Christians have is that the WBC's interpretation of those teachings is different from how they, as well as a large percentage of the rest of the population, would interpret them.

Or, as a Christian would say, they teach that the Bible says something that it doesn't, they are teaching something that goes against the actual teachings of the Bible. Whether or not they are sincere in their misunderstanding of the Bible is not relevant--what is relevant is what they actually teach.

Remember, if you are a Christian (at least an orthodox Christian), heretics aren't Christians, and so a church of heretics isn't a Christian church.

So you believe that the only qualifications to being a "christian" is that you self label yourself as a christian?

Then we fall into the 'no true Scottsman fallacy' and the term 'chuch' becomes subjective and ultimately meaningless.

No, they're not (according to other Christians). The WBC might think that they are following the teachings of Jesus based on their misinterpretation of the Bible, but as a matter of fact they are not. This is because these traditional Christians believe that what Jesus actually taught is that God is love, and that we should emulate this Godly characteristic by acting in a loving manner towards everyone else--sinner as well as Christian.

No, a Christian is somebody who thinks that Jesus was divine, at least in some respect (either God himself, the son of God, or simply divinely 'gifted'), believes Jesus died to cleanse our sins, and accepts that the Bible is in one way or another divinely inspired.
