Wouldn't selecting 'No' be admitting that the reasons you believe don't include it mattering whether or not it's true?

Or that it is less important than some other factor, for example, comfort or aesthetics.

(Yes, this poll is partly motivated by Freteloo's posts in the "how comforting is religion" thread)

Ya, I was debating whether I should vote "no" for precisely that reason. But, I guess, I'd rather live in a boringer world than a self-chosen delusion.

There must be no God because you still have that terrible, flashing avatar.

I find this interesting. Its not that the world would suddenly get more boring, or that it suddenly becomes less aesthetically pleasing, its just that you think it did. This seems to imply that you are already self deluding, in that you are assigning meaning and qualities to the world that are not there. The world is as it is, dont you think its strange that finding out that one of your beliefs is false can suddenly change the way the world appears? What does that say about beliefs, even true ones?

I probably havent made my point very clear, but hopefully you get my meaning.

I would think it says that they're very normal. We routinely operate under the assumption that things/experiences/social interactions have meaning(s) which it may turn out they do not have. Upon learning that we were mistaken, those things/experiences/interactions that used to have special significance lose that significance. That - to me - makes them boringer.

I really want to know what's going on with the raptor head guy...

It (minus the raptor head, which is a joke addition in the Raptor Jesus tradition) is from a documentary called "Jesus Camp". If you haven't seen it I think it will be relevant to your interests.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486358/

The avatar is just a vehicle for the excellent pun in my location, obviously.

Just sayin', it would provide you with great fodder.

Oh yeah and I voted yes... I would want to know.
I think I would be a pretty grim atheist though.

Just to be clear, you try to avoid watching factual documentaries that are relevant to your strongly-held beliefs regarding childhood indoctrination, which could make you better informed on the subject?

So given the theists here would want to know what would knowing look like? I answered yes but I don't know how honest I can actually be about that.

Well, when I get annoyed enough that my hand just isn't covering it up enough, I'm going to have to choose between turning off all avatars and using the ignore list. Won't matter to me which avatar you're using at the time.

I didn't say I avoid them all, let's just say I don't jump eagerly all over every chance to watch yet another long documentary or film about what religions do with kids. I've been around a while, seen plenty of stuff like that, still get exposed to it in minor ways on an almost daily basis, I think I have a pretty good idea now and not watching them is better for my blood pressure. Do you think that the Gun Control lobby can't have a valid opinion unless they've seen every documentary about the NRA? It's kinda like that I think. We know what they're up to, we don't necessarily need to put ourselves through 90 blood boiling minutes of more of the same even if it might contain some previously unknown fact nuggets.

You've seen my posts on this subject, I doubt that there's anything I think that I haven't said at some point, If you think that I would benefit from watching that specific documentary, i.e. if there's something different about it, then I will? Honestly, (I read the synopsis) as soon as I saw that Ted Haggard was in it, that didn't help motivate me to watch it, seen enough of that idiot already.
