Actually, it makes a big difference. If the story is meant to be literal (can't believe I'm falling for the literal/figurative/allegorical goalpost-shifting game), and it's clearly untrue, then the Bible is not inerrant. Who cares if doctrine is based off of the story? I don't recall "must have doctrine based from it" being a prerequisite for inerrancy.
