Feel free to enlighten me on all these intelligent people that believe in nonsense.

That is kind of a contradiction in itself though, so I think you'll need all the help you can get.

Funny thing is atheists around here quote the bible about ten times as often and way more effectively than Christians do.

Aaron W. and Jibninjas are both very smart regulars on this forum that believe the Christian God created us.

The average theist isn't as smart as the average atheist, but there are a lot of very smart theists as well.

They somehow suspend logic and reasoning when dealing with this one issue.

It's funny when you think about it briefly, but as you said, the dumbest athiest is probably as smart as the smartest christian, so it's not unusual at all

If they really were smart, I doubt they would suspend their logic and reasoning to deal with one of the most important issues they will have to deal with in their whole lives.

Maybe they're just risk averse, riding Pascal's Wager on the stake that if they're wrong, it won't matter. I bet deep down they know they are almost certainly wrong though.

Well, there's RLK, who I believe has a Ph.D in Chemistry. So there you go.

I love this argument, but really, as long as you're a good person with morals, I think even if there were a god, he'd be logical and understand that no intelligent person would actually believe in the nonsense spewed from religion.

But what does it say about a person's intelligence, if they can pass a few tests to get a degree but still believe in fairy tales?

I think they are probably "talented" but not intelligent, or else they are riding the wager like I said in the above post.

Thanks for weighing in! I can always tell that your opinions are carefully weighed and considered before you post, and that's really what makes me appreciate you here.

My PhD is in Chemical Engineering and the school was ranked #1 in the US at the time. I will respond this much out of respect for All-In. The reason you will not see me in this thread is that you are a troll with nothing to say. IRL I would probably never encounter you and if I did I would probably not notice. Say something intelligent and maybe I will participate.

So essentially, 'theist', to you guys, pretty well means 'unintelligent'? Why ask for evidence if your prejudice will just cause you to dismiss it when it's presented? Why not just say: "Sorry, I'm firmly committed to the idea that anyone who disagrees with me on this particular point is stupid"?

The real problem is making generalisations of "smart" people and "dumb" people. There are no smart or dumb people. Just people who do dumb/smart things.

Just because somebody often behaves or thinks in a rational way, it doesn't mean they ALWAYS do so.

As an example, on another forum people were discussing the story of the maths genius who lived in a ****hole in Russia. He'd rejected a ton of money as a prize for solving basically the hardest maths problem ever. Somebody argued that he probably had some insight into life and money that we couldn't understand, because he was "smart". Just because the dude is incredible at maths, does not mean he thinks logically about everything.

Sure, and I won 3 noble prizes...anyone can make up lies, not difficult. No one is trolling; it's called speaking the truth. As was said, you believe in fairy tales as a grownup; it's that simple really

This is problably right.

Or to put it in other words, they are generally intelligent people who believe some very "dumb" things, most likely because of social conditioning that occurred as a child.

It's more sad than anything else really.

Of course it means unintelligent..because as was said, only unintelligent people actually believe in ridiculous concepts such as religion.

This is so wrong it's just LOL to read

And fwiw, generalizations are almost always correct, and of course only apply to the majority of people, and there are usually exceptions (but very very few regarding this issue). It goes without saying that generalizations don't apply to literally EVERYONE, but to the vast majority

That's nice and all but my doctorate in particle physics says you need to STFU.

From a #1 school btw. Worldwide not US.

It was a slight exaggeration; however, like most generalizations there are exceptions
