Maybe they're just risk averse, riding Pascal's Wager on the stake that if they're wrong, it won't matter. I bet deep down they know they are almost certainly wrong though.
The real problem is making generalisations of "smart" people and "dumb" people. There are no smart or dumb people. Just people who do dumb/smart things.
Just because somebody often behaves or thinks in a rational way, it doesn't mean they ALWAYS do so.
As an example, on another forum people were discussing the story of the maths genius who lived in a ****hole in Russia. He'd rejected a ton of money as a prize for solving basically the hardest maths problem ever. Somebody argued that he probably had some insight into life and money that we couldn't understand, because he was "smart". Just because the dude is incredible at maths, does not mean he thinks logically about everything.
