RGT Shutting Down (Strike that, staying open) RGT Shutting Down (Strike that, staying open)

Hi Posters,

I've been talking it over with management, and we have come to the view that it is time for RGT to shut down. We don't get very much posting anymore these days and most of our regulars are no longer active. And, after ten years of moderating this forum, I'm ready to quit. Thus, we are planning to archive this forum. This means that your prior posts here should remain searchable, but no new threads or posts can be made and RGT will be taken off the forum listing.

I've done a lot of writing and thinking in RGT over the last decade. I appreciate many of you for what you have written here; both for your own perspective and arguments and for forcing me to clarify my own. We've gotten older, and hopefully wiser, and I hope that the discussions here has been of benefit for you guys as well. I wish you the best.

Anyway, if you have any questions, comments, or objections, please post them here. Also, I know there is new management, but this closure is coincidental and not done at their urging - I was the person who suggested it was time to close down RGT.

Not to diminish the contribution of others along with this forum in general but you know how there's a teacher or two that stick out in your mind? You're definitely one of them in my mind.
Many thanks,
John

this forum does indeed suck and won't be missed but is there a cost to keeping it beyond mental health?

don't see why we are cutting out content

Thank you Original Position for your contributions in this Forum both as a moderator and as a poster. I enjoyed our exchanges/debates very much.

Wasn’t this forum spun off from SMP originally back when 2+2 as a whole was much more active? I think combining the low volume somewhat academic subject forums like SMP, RGT and History into a single place would make the combined place active enough to be worth it? Or maybe not.

Whatever Aaron's opinion is about this shutdown, I take the opposite view. Unless he says thanks for the conversations in years past, in which case I'll begrudgingly have to agree.

It seems to me that your second sentence is answered by your first. 2p2 is not just a place to post whatever you want regardless of quality or topic.

I think zeno is not interested in taking over the remaining conversational dregs of RGT.

I think the bulk of my 2+2 posts are in this forum, but I agree that it has seen better days and more interesting discussions.

i still don't understand why we're closing sub forums

if it's an issue of no mods then why not advertise for new ones and/or conider just leaving it as an unmodded wild wild west?

Agreed.

At a minimum I hope we're able to go back and browse old threads as we are now, it being like EDF would be unfortunate.

I don't really know what technical possibilities are available for defunct forums. Old threads should at least be searchable if it is archived, at which point you can browse them, but not sure if the forum itself would still be browsable.

AFAIK 2p2 doesn't do unmodded forums (nor should it). The reasons I have given for why I think the forum should be closed down is because traffic is very low, indicating little interest in the topic, and the quality of discussion has deteriorated, indicating little value in what traffic there is. An assumption here is I don't think 2p2 should maintain forums unless there is a sufficient amount of interest in the topic and the quality of the posting meets a minimum standard of value. If someone disagrees and is interested in moderating this forum as is (and is qualified to moderate it), they can appeal to management to do so.

Traffic is low everywhere, if you want to leave then tell management so but to state shut down is an overreach. The science forum is no more active and as far as quality of posts that's a given throughout all the forums.

RGT is quite often read and probably more so than the science forum ; make it work, don't kill it, The best to you.

this is a chicken or the egg issue

if it's left unattended then maybe it could see a revival one day

if it's shut down then it'll never ben able to rebound

but most importantly, the cost of keeping it nil, there's literally no reason to excise parts of the site - if you want less clutter then maybe bury it a bit deeper but it literally costs nothing to keep going

Do you see it shutting down? It doesn't get much traffic either but the content at least has more potential.

IMO you have been a superb moderator and poster here. Over the years there have been some real thought provoking threads here. At times posters kept an open mind and discussed topics reasonably. It encouraged me to re-think a lot of my beliefs.

If you know of another decent forum on this topic on the web, let me know.

I have no inside information, but I assume zeno can moderate it as long as he wants.

Closure is best and wisest. Already gone over and decided. Move on with your lives. Some need to Stop being so pathetic.

Search for other outlets and sites. This is mainly a poker forum. Let Go!

As noted nothing will be lost. Just ended. Move on! Thanks.

This!

Theology doesn't need its own forum; it belongs in SMP.
