Religious practice vs belief Religious practice vs belief

A couple of years ago....

I was stressed out, met with a counselor, and came up with a non-religious stress relief program where the primary method was to meditate.

So, I started a daily meditation program where I sit or lie in a quiet place and focus on my breath.

It seems to work.

In looking at it: historically, meditation started out as a religious practice --- as did prayer, yoga, drumming, etc ---

Does anyone here have the experience of a religious practice without the religion?

I think many religious practices are highly effective. I don't know much about it, though.

This makes no sense. What is a "religious practice", without a defined "religion"?

BTW, meditation is awesome.

The OP explains it fairly well.

Fwiw people tend to say "italian food" even if the food has never been in italy and the people who made it have less italian genes than Genghis Khan.

"Derived from <x>" you can assume such expressions to mean - they are common language constructs.

There are different kinds of meditation. Buddhist meditation is just the most well known.

Though people don't realize it in the Christian tradition knowing scripture is a kind of meditation. We actually make it a part of us when we memorize it. This is a kind of early step in meditation.
