Apple Computers is a cult.......You can see it in the eyes of someone who loves Apple right after they announce a new product.
Not to mention the lines outside the stores on the day of the release.

Bring back MS-DOS!!!

I think a better definition of a cult is:

Quote:
1. It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate and retain its members

2. It forms an elitist totalitarian society.

3. Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable and has charisma.

4. It believes 'the end justifies the means' in order to solicit funds recruit people.

5. Its wealth does not benefit its members or society.

It's all in how you view religions. Sometimes the people who follow and claim to represent the religion give it a bad name.

This is a pretty silly metric for respect. Am I to respect someone who believes in gremlins, unicorns and that 2+2=5? They don't harm me right so why should I care?

Of course, religion is tremendously influential so it doesn't even satisfy this test, but harmfulness cannot be the only condition of respect.

If someone believes their pet hamster created the universe, I will never respect that belief.

Whatever actions people commit can be judged on its own merits, I don't see the relevance in someone believing that very hamster commands them to do only good. I'll respect them for doing good, but I'll still disrespect their hamsterian belief system.

How can others respect your point of view if you don't respect theirs?

Praise, the Hamster Lord, he died on the wheel for your sins!

In theory, a cult is a dangerous religion.

In practice, because there is no social consensus on "dangerousness" and many powerful religions do things that might be considered "dangerous" too, a cult is an unpopular religion.
