I agree with this. I also find him a bit of a bad writer too though; not in the content but in the delivery. The only book of his I've really enjoyed was Darwin's Dangerous Idea, which makes me think that he is only really good at writing if one already is very familiar with the subject matter. I'd contrast him with Steven Pinker, who probably isn't quite as smart as Dennett, but speaks and writes in perfect paragraphs and really manages to convey complex ideas very efficiently.
That said, he certainly is a very legitimate and highly respected/cited philosopher. Just a poor communicator to laymen.
