Proverbs 8:22 : “House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the Lord."

Think of what you'd do if she were just another girl. Then do that.

I told a few of my buddies (non-theist, but not really interested in religion) about determinism/free will. They said the former is ridiculous, and of course we make decisions. Most people react the same way the first time they learn about determinism. Do you guys notice this too?

Definitely. I remember the first time I heard of the issue in college. My initial reaction was totally emotional, as if I was being told I wasn't actually alive or something. I was just thinking 'How would you ever even get out of bed in the morning if you actually thought that? How would anything ever matter to you?' Not even related to whether it was true or false, really. But once it sank in and I was able to detach emotionally, I realised I'd never actually thought about the issue, because 'Free Will' was always presented as completely uncontroversial.

I suspect libertarian free will is much like theism, in that if people were exposed to alternative viewpoints earlier in life, far fewer of them would maintain the position throughout their adult lives.

I still have that dissonance, even though I'm largely convinced that determinism is true. I'm hoping something like quantum mechanics can pull free will out of the fire, but based on what we know to date, it seems that determinism is the way things are. Makes my head hurt to think about it.

I find it interesting how quickly people reject determinism. One thing I emphasized when arguing with them was, you have only considered determinism for a few minutes now. Other people come to conclusions much faster than I do (I've noticed).

One of the kids brought up the Heisenberg uncertainty principle as an argument against determinism. (Then a Christian came into the room and agreed with him.) The other kid was saying, 'it kind of makes sense.' Then I was like, what did I get myself into? We agreed it was depressing. They asked me how I live my life in such a mindset, and we returned to playing Smash.

Just saw "The God Who Wasn't There." Little slowly paced and some of the graphics and stuff were annoying. But some really good interviews (Richard Carrier, Harris, etc.) including some pretty funny Evangelist Christians. Also, interesting critique of moderate Christianity.

meh, saw it, I was really looking forward to it, it had so much potential, but the story just didn't make much sense. Had some pretty cool scenes though

(my spoilers don't give much away, but just in case people don't want to know anything about it)

Spoiler:

Ended up just basically being a survival zombie flick.

Spoiler:

God basically decides that humanity is corrupt again, and Noah's-ark style, aims to take humanity out, but with zombie and demon like-angels.

Anyone have any good recommendations for some artists doing old time spirituals?

Yes, I am an atheist but some of my favorite music is old time gospel, specifically bluegrass, and I'm trying to find some good compilations of song like "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "Talk About Sufferin'" (my favorite version of which is probably Doc Watson's a cappella one).

I'm really not a fan of any new Christian artists like that Mercy Me crap (not just because they're Christian, just more hate that new manufactured pop music sound in general) but I love the Carter Family and the Stanley Brothers, so if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

Thanks.

I'm going to make some baseless accusations here.

Jibninjas is not a ninja, but a pirate.

Gunth has never once said "DA BEARS" or "DA BULLS"

JoeyDiamonds is not scottish, but in fact Irish.

It is against Megenoita's religion to write a post using less than 1000 words.

Wamy Einehouse is in fact, not confirmed Winehouse.

Lestat is not a vampire.

Hopey's last name is Changey. Sarah Palin is always interested in him.

Jerok's native language is Latin.

Bunny hates Australia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbits_in_Australia

More to come.

If Jesus agreed to play a game of starcraft he would zerg rush if it is the perfect strategy at the time imo.
