No way. We're very permissive about these things - swearing on television is common. In fact, our parliamentarians try to sound down-to-earth by regularly accusing one another of bull****.

I'm still confused how you have an atheist prime minister who opposes gay marriage

Gotcha. Thanks.

Also, are meat pies in every gas station like in NZ?

I had a love/hate thing going with those when I was in NZ for ~6 months a couple years ago. Some days they were the best thing I've ever tasted. Other days I felt like I just ate a toxic squirrel that was recently scrapped off the side of the road.

And holy crap you guys need to get some better air conditioning in your airports. I had a ~6 hours layover in Sydney and it was borderline unbearable.

This guys has thousands of short instructional videos dealing with pretty much every topic you could think of. There's some solid biology videos (pretty basic) dealing with evolution for those of you who are interested.

Truly amazing that he's taken the time to do all of these. I started brushing up on my math again and I wish this guy was around when I was in high school because he really breaks things down in a simple way (at least for me).
dude, Im going back to school to get a financing masters, great great stuff in the financing section. Tyty

Not that you were educated in a secular country, but that I wasn't.

Although I was raised in California, so I'm way better off than a lot of people here. (here being the US, not this board.)

So decided this was the best place to put this question..

The other night I was talking out of my ass about how evolution isn't really that we just came from modern monkeys, but was actually that we split off some point long ago and we both developed how we did. Girlfriend postulated that Darwin's evolution did indeed say we came from modern monkeys(like monkeys were already evolved and nearly identical to how they are today), and at that point I realized I really don't know enough about the subject and am going from just random knowledge I picked up.

So I come here wondering how I can best learn about evolution. I would gladly read Wikipedia and such, but I probably need something starting a bit simpler and I also want to know it is at least as correct as possible, i.e., it is the common held believe among scientists.

Anyone have any decent suggestions?

edit: Wow I'm an idiot for not seeing the Khan stuff like 2 posts up. I'll start checking that out, but also feel free to give me any more ideas.

tl;dr you're right and your gf is wrong. As far as I know Darwin didn't contend we were descended from modern apes, but I don't see why it would matter if he did. Darwin first published over 150 years ago.

Don't know any simple sources for evolution info, unfortunately.

You guys are wimps. We were in the US a few weeks back during a so-called "Heat wave". Gimme a break, it hardly got to 100 Fahrenheit.

I wonder who asked to have my thread moved to Politics.

9/11 is a religious atrocity.

Besides we had a running debate a while back that atheists were more intelligent because Chomsky was the most intelligent intellectual around or something to that effect.

If atheists feel that Chomsky is representative of them then as far as I can tell his statements regarding religious atrocities are discussion worthy in this forum and my thread was just a continuation of that thread topic in which Subfallen took theists to task because we weren't as intelligent as Chomsky.

Now that it has been discovered that Chomsky has feet of clay nobody wants to hear about it any more?

You don't remember Subfallen making an argument concerning Chomsky to NotReady. I wish I could recall the thread title. Maybe NotReady will remember it though it was a good while back.

Subfallen made an appeal to authority: Chomsky's.

I remember Subfallen referring to Chomsky (I did too - I think Chomsky is both brilliant and moral). I also remember you making similar statements back then. I just dont think:

"atheists were more intelligent because Chomsky was the most intelligent intellectual around or something to that effect"

is a fair characterisation of the arguments that Subfallen and I put forth.

Well I'm going to let it go but it's absurd moving a religious atrocity thread over to Politics. If the mods are going to make ruthless decisions they at least better be based on logic. Since I don't post in Politics with any degree of regularity it doesn't make sense to move a thread I started over there. But I suppose somebody on here got cute and thought they could pm the mods. Which means we now have mods and under mods w/o names. They should check with the thread starter before they re-assign threads because that was a legitimate RGT thread related to an earlier thread.

It doesn't matter if/who wanted the thread move. The fact is that 9/11 was a political event and Chomsky is a political figure. Your OP seemed to have nothing to do with religion, hence the move to politics.

No it was a religious/political event.

They only run a 9/11 plane pic almost once a day in random threads in this forum. How many times has rize and a few others posted that pic?
