Cheers zumby, turned down the chance when I graduated 20 years ago but think I'm much better prepared now and a part of that is down to following the discussions here over the last couple.

I remember you telling me that moral philosophy can be pretty complex and while I can already confirm that I'm about to find out just how.

Applied Philosophy. It's going to take some work and I'm going to have to learn to write but I'm looking forward to it.

What kind of vocational opportunities would this lead to (if that is the intention, I mean)?

I haven't any in mind so I haven't really considered it but it's the applied ethics component that most interests me and seems that's the area that may provide some. NGO policy and ethics though I suspect I'd need some further post grad in social policy or something.

I'm kinda stuck, I earn more than I could expect to earn if I changed career and it may be that I can do better work by staying on my current career path and donating, from a personal point of view I may prefer to change jobs but it's a question I've got a couple of years to consider.

I can't remember which thread I saw this, and can't think of a good way to search, but I remember a video posted (at least I think it was a video) quite a while ago, many months at the least, that showed how simple rules can lead to complex scenarios, showing a computer simulation of simple objects with an input and output (I think) with simple rules, and how different combinations of these objects resulted in much more complex patterns of 'behaviour'.

I suspect it was a zumby posting, but I'm just hoping someone remembers it enough to be able to give me a link? TIA

I suspect you are thinking of Conway's game of life. Here's a video if you are interested.

Forgot to respond to this earlier, but good luck dereds!

Richard Carrier is debating an Evangelical Christian in my town in Sept.

http://www.abbotsfordtoday.ca/did-jesus-exist/

If I make it to the event I will likely do a thread on it. I plan on attending but I have a lot going on right now so not sure I can go.

I think the topic should be kind of easy for the evangelical guy to "win" even though I don't think he is an experienced debater AFAIK.

Carrier is, by a good margin, the best defender of mythicism.

Brush up on Bayes's Theorem. There will be a lot of talk about low prior probabilities and such.

Do you know anything about Earl Doherty? I started reading Jesus, Neither God Nor Man, and almost started a thread titled "Help! Stop me from becoming a mythicist!"

Ummmm... what happened to the Dawkins thread? There was actually some interesting conversation in there.

My guess is Dawkins' premise was offensive.

I wasn't offensive.

Maybe long winded, but not offensive.

I don't make these judgments here. Interesting discussion though, cheers, wil.

So "The Unbelievers" was disappointing. I am not sure what I expected but I guess I was expecting a bit more content.

It would have been cool to see a highlight reel of debates or something like that. I was looking forward to watching it and it was so anti-climactic. Its basically just Krauss and Dawkins touring around saying science is great and religion not so much.

I didn't get through all of it, because it seemed like it was just some highlights of debates/lectures, no? I was encouraged to watch it, but it didn't seem as relevant as the debates themselves.
