'Serpent-Handling' West Virginia Pastor Dies From Snake Bite

Quote:
A "serpent-handling" West Virginia pastor died after his rattlesnake bit him during a church ritual, just as the man had apparently watched a snake kill his father years before.
Quote:
Snake-handlers point to scripture as evidence that God calls them to engage in such a practice to show their faith in him. Mark 16: 17-18 reads, "And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
Definitely Darwin-Award worthy.

Yes. Because every day before lunch, after praying for those who persecute me, and thinking of a way that I can show love to my enemy, I burn a sorceress alive.

Yeah, well one group of scientists managed a cure, but the millions of devout people who prayed for that exact result don't get any credit? Typical atheist propoganda.

Don't know why they posted a pure science article in an RGT article thread. There's no religion in the article.

Of course no one's probably did more than Francis Collins, a theist and former head of the Human Genome Project, at identifying the role that defective genes play in diseases. He's found the cure to more than one disease himself.

Wiki quote:
"He joined the University of Michigan in 1984, rising to the rank of Professor of Internal Medicine and Human Genetics. He heightened his reputation as a gene hunter. That gene-hunting approach, which he named "positional cloning", developed into a powerful component of modern molecular genetics.

In the 1980s, several scientific teams were working to identify the genes for cystic fibrosis. Toward the end of the decade, progress had been made, but Lap-Chee Tsui, heading the team working at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, considered that a shortcut was needed, to speed up the process. For this purpose, he contacted Francis Collins, who joined the team and used his chromosome jumping technique. subsequently, the gene was discovered in June 1989. The discovery was covered by Science Sept 8, 1989. This was soon followed by other scientific teams genetic discoveries, including isolation of the genes for Huntington's disease, neurofibromatosis, and multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1."

At upwards of US$500, the cost of slaughtering a buffalo to revive a relative condemned to ill-health by the spirits has pushed the Jarai indigenous minority residents of Somkul village in Ratanakkiri to a more affordable religious option: Christianity.

Quote:
“We believe in Christianity because we are poor; we don’t have money to buy buffaloes, chickens and pigs to pray for the spirits of the god of land or the god of water when those gods make us get sick,” he said.
