Many people have these feelings. The greatest tragedy, as far as I can see, is to be so blind to the reality of your indestructible existence, that you think what doesn't matter here is that you were here. That you are here is the only reason here, is here.

Why doesn't god help me then? If he knows that the bible is underwhelming to me, which, based on common definitions of god he should, why doesn't he personally help me?

I don't think there is an easy answer here. Looking down into the this great abyss from time to time is the price you pay for not wanting to believe in fairytales. No one ever said atheism was going to be easy.

Although I disagree that a life is meaningless if it's not remembered in 5,000 or 5,000,000 years. The implication is that statement is that the lives of people in the future are worth more than our own.

They aren't. This, right now, is as real and as important as it gets. And given a choice between existing for an infidecimally short period of time and no time at all, I'll choose the former.

Enjoy the experience, try not to break anything, and turn the lights off when you leave.

Edit: And when in doubt, think about Arthur. That always helps me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QLSRMoKKS0
