There difference is that the religious right assigns a lot more value to being the same as the founding fathers. The left is more okay with being something different or new.

Given that the majority of Americans are pretty ignorant of the details of early US History, I think you're overly optimistic in your assessment by a very wide margin.

Given that it's a strong political talking point on the right and barely gets a mention on the left, it's a big deal even if thinkers like this are in the minority. That minority is heavily shaping the political landscape.
