Given that the majority of Americans are pretty ignorant of the details of early US History, I think you're overly optimistic in your assessment by a very wide margin.

Given that it's a strong political talking point on the right and barely gets a mention on the left, it's a big deal even if thinkers like this are in the minority. That minority is heavily shaping the political landscape.
