You are the lead author of your story, right? After all, you decide your occupation, where you live, who to be in relationship with, and so on. In reality, none of that determines who is actually the lead author of your story. Let me explain.

We each have an inherent understanding that our story is supposed to be good. You avoid, deny, and suppress the painful and unpleasant in your life and seek to protect the good. This is in opposition to another force which seems to be uncooperative of this intention. Nevertheless, you have the upper hand in this battle since your life is relatively pain free most of the time, confirming you are the lead author of your life.

However, whether or not your life is relatively pain free most of the time is not the relevant question either as it relates to authority. Are you actually able to protect the good in your life? This is the fundamental question. The alternative view says there is an unstoppable force which steals the meaning out of your life, which steals the good from your life. In this view, the other force is the true lead author of your life and believing otherwise is to deceive yourself.

Alcoholics Anonymous gets this right. They understand the necessity of submitting to reality checks and acknowledging the truth which says you are not the actual lead author of your life.

Or are they mistaken as I am? Surely, this other force which clearly undermines the good must not be in service of the good. You have built your story on a foundation of your own understanding of the good. Should you allow this foundation to be destroyed and trust such a threatening force to be the lead author of your life?

If you are indeed the lead author, then you have the choice to deny this force, but if you are not, then no such choice is available to you. At this point, it’s not about preference, but rather about honesty and truth. It’s back to the fundamental question: Are you actually able to protect the meaning and the good in your life or has it been stolen from you?

Wherever it is you feel joy and peace, the exact location, that is where your life and where your house is located.

When someone who is stronger and more powerful than you plunders your house in the dark and leaves, then you will falsely believe you were successful in scaring him off and defending your house. Only in the light will you see the truth of the situation.

A long time ago, a wise person taught that the eye is the light of the world. He also said he is the light of the world. He offers unification. In doing so, he offers light through new eyes which can light up worlds and light up homes.
