For the following reasons:

1) Xmas is hardly a religious holiday anymore. Besides a few mangers spread around town, no one really connects the holiday with the birth of Jesus.

2) Due to this secularization of Xmas, the central focus of the holiday is really capitalism. The boost to the economy caused by Xmas spending helps the capitalist train keep moving around the yearly track.

3) Jews have lots of money, so they could have a tremendous impact on boosting Xmas spending.

4) Lets face it Hanukkah is kind of lame. Jewish kids would no longer have to feel envious that their classmates have a better holiday than they do.

1) I don't know where you live, but much of the holiday around me seems to focus on Christianity/Jesus. You can certainly celebrate the holiday secularly, and some Jews do. For me personally, though, the holiday feels too connected to religion for me to partake. I do celebrate Halloween though, as this does not feel religious at all to me.

2) Hanukkah already exists.

3) Hanukkah already exists.

4) It would take more than this for Jewish kids to not feel different from their classmates.

I have always lived on the coasts, and right now I live in Sin City, so maybe the Bible Belt, MidWest, South, etc. are different.

Sure people go to church on xmas eve and say silly little prayers before they open their gifts, and so on. But I think it is mostly out of tradition. All but the most fundamentalist sheep understand that the immaculate baby Jesus was not really born on Dec 25.

And more importantly, I think it is the Jews' responsibility to help retailers reach their annual same store sales goals.

They could just cancel Hanukkah. I think it would bother people for a few years but then pretty much everyone would forget it ever existed.

Jews already buy gifts on Hanukkah. Canceling it for Christmas wouldn't help at all.

Yeah but they buy little gifts like dreidels and yarmulkes.

For Xmas we Christians give things like flat screen TVs. Because the Jews are so rich, they could really help problems like this:

And for a moment I thought this could have been a serious thread.

I think this is funny. We could use some lite comedy now and then.

If it's any comfort we bought our flat screen TV in July so that the Sony Store wouldn't have to suffer until Xmas.

It is serious. Am I mistaken about Hanukkah gifts being smaller typically than xmas gifts?

I would be very interested to know the relative percentages of annual income Jews spend during the holidays compared to Christians.

That was extra-specially conscientious of you to pay a significant premium by buying the TV from the Sony Store and not Amazon. This TV is $400 less from Amazon and, depending on what state you are in, you could have avoided sales tax.

Is Jewish thriftiness a myth?

OP obv doesn't realize just how great we Jews have it: Christians are under a deadline/obligation. Those Xmas presents have to under the fire hazard tree at a specific time or else the kids will be desperately disappointed, not to mention the wife if they are unlucky enough to have one.

We Jews get to wait for the after Xmas sales and are the only ones left w/ ready cash to snap up the bargains.

That is a good point but isn't it a little bit selfish?

If we all spread our spending around the calendar haphazardly, it would decrease transparency in the stock markets. Wall Street needs the solid deadlines to be able to effectively track retail sales.

All my Jew friends said the same thing as you did above at the poker table even though talking that way in front of Christians is usually forbidden and, indeed, we got a few funny looks while speaking of it but tbh I did check the Costco site and all they had was some crappy looking stuff and it wasn't all that much less expensive and wasn't as up-to-date as what they had at the Sony Store. Plus, when you buy at the Sony Store they kiss your ass right there but if you buy online you don't get to get your ass kissed.

The solution is simple.......

Jews should celebrate Xmas, but shouldn't celebrate Christmas

I am most likely being leveled here but .. the "X" comes from a greek letter that is used as a abbreviation for "Christ".
Obviously the Mas part of Xmas and Christmas come from the same place.

Mass .. obviously.

I think that might be inappropriate considering they killed Jesus.

Had they not killed Jesus, he would never have risen from the dead, he would have not been able to prove his claim to be the Son of God, and Xmas wouldn't exist at all.

So Jews are directly responsible for Xmas.

The Xmas holiday season is also one of the biggest times of the year in movie ticket sales, and Jews make a lot of movies.

Why are Jews letting their religion keep them from fully enjoying the dopest holiday of the year?

Once you go Claus and his sack... you never go back.

Also I notice that Hanukkah is sometimes spelled Chanukkah.

Obvious marketing attempt to blur the lines between the two holidays in the minds of consumers. They add the C to make it look and sound more like the holiday industry's leading brand. Nice try...

Yeah, but what about the chinese restaurants? They'd go out of business without the Jews dining en masse on Christmas Eve!

As a christian, I, for one, would be willing to incorporate that tradition into our own.

Christmas dinner has an identity problem anyway: too soon after Thanksgiving for turkey, goose is tough and gamey, and ham isn't going to help us bring Jews into the fold. Chinese is cool with me. That's what the white people eat at the end of the Christmas Story.
