how can you be sure the bible is the word of god?

searching the forum it seems this has been touched upon in other threads, but i just wanted to make it succinct and answered in layman's terms.
the bible is written by people, who were instructed by god (yes/no?). why do you believe them? any old joe schmoe could've written something and said it was the word of god. and iirc, the last passage is paraphrased to say 'no further works shall be added'. clever by that guy to get the last word imo!
apologies for any ignorance displayed by me; i'm all up for learning.
(also sorry for any lack of coherence - i've been up for over a day)
