Esophageal cancer is pretty much the kiss of death.

Very sad indeed. But someone should set the odds on him having a conversation. What would they be?

You're right. That would be too easy. Odds are 100% that he'll have some kind of conversation before he goes. Okay, fine. Then what do you think the odds are he'll have some sort of a conversion?

Some Christians can be hilarious. Have you ever read any of the hate mail Richard Dawkins receives? Once on the Atheist Experience this guy calls in sounding all nice and reflective until the host Matt Dillahunty keeps owning over and over. Finally the guy erupts and says he's gonna come down there and punch his big fat head in for Jesus! The funniest part is, they don't even realize how stupid they are.

Sad. But what did he really expect with the heavy drinking and smoking?
Hitchens diagnosed with esophageal cancer Quote

What does drinking have to do with it? At least some good will come of it though, everyone who knows Hitchens knows he smoked heavily and the thought that "smoking will only cause cancer if you smoke until your like 80" is obviously wrong. Other than that, sad day.

But you don't need a esophagus to write, luckily.

Esophageal cancer is correlated with both alcohol and tobacco consumption. Smoking is by far a bigger factor, though.

I do feel for the guy though. Love him or loathe him, Hitchens isn't shy about sharing his opinion, and he is a genuinely excellent writer.

Guess you never watched Intervention's (the most depressing show in the history of t.v.) Lawrence and Bret. Lawrence died drinker/smoker at 34 or so from esophagael bleeding, the other less than 10 years of just heavy drinking and dead at 45. Sad for all 3. Hitchens has about as much chance as Swayze

I should have said, "People can be awful." I'm sure the people who made those comments can be nice guys, too.

Some people's deaths are okay to celebrate imo. I would need to learn about Jerry Falwell to pass judgment (I'm too young?).
It seems like a pretty hateful thread.

edit: whoops thought this was the one on hannity's show where hitchens owns him.

either way, hitchens' conviction in everything that he says/writes is amazing, even for people who don't agree with his end of the spectrum regarding religion. wish him the best.

The thing that struck me when I saw Hitchens for the first time was, how remarkably young he looked for a sixty year old, Dawkins and Dennett are roughly the same age, and they look decades older. I guess this caused me to be more surprised to hear of his health problems than I should have been.
He could pull through though, it happens.

This. I didn't actually know he was 60. I thought he was like 40, but checked out his wiki page to see.

I wish him all the best in his treatment... It would truly be a sad day for FreeThinkers everywhere if he were to pass. Much respect to anyone who isn't afraid to speak their mind to the level of Christopher Hitchens...
