Hell has been mentioned for many thousands of years before the Christian church (or Jewish religion for that matter).
I've come to believe that we are bound by our virtues and merits, and those attributes are the winds that lead us into any of the six realms (our Earth being one, the animal realm one of the other few most of us can perceive with our sensory perceptions).
The direct effects of our actions on our future can be seen in real-world examples everyday... what excludes that same law from being valid in other realms (assuming a non-zero chance there is a hell)?
Almost every religion (some more valid than others) mention hell as one of our possible destinations... the how and why we possibly arrive there seem much more unclear. I do think that to completely discount so many great minds over the years who have believed there is a hell, is quite conceited... even if one is an atheist.
Guess we'll find out how it all works (or doesn't) when our time comes.
