First off, ha ha, but you can read any of the numerous links that I have presented as to why "period of time" is more plausible of an interpretation.

Secondly, I have no problem believing that Jonah did not literally spend 3 days in a whale (or fish rather)

And yet, if I tell you that I have no problem believing that Jesus wasn't "literally" resurrected, or "literally" born of a virgin -- I'm guessing you'd have a problem with that, right?
