I would say that the direct evidence of your senses is the only thing you are arguably "forced" to believe. Everything else is a function of what arbitrary premises of reason you accept, consciously or otherwise.

Krumb, your viewpoint is entirely correct. It is a classic carrot and stick situation, you don't get a choice, as it is obviously a no-brainer - no one would ever choose to go to hell.

It is about controlling people by forcing them to behave in a ceratin way by intimidating them with a nasty outcome if they do not comply. Coercing people into behaving in certain ways by intimidation is what bullies and dictators do. God is basically a brutal dictator.

Think if the rules were crazy, and you had to do bad things like kill people to get into heaven - would people do it? Yes of course they would.

Think 9/11. If people are offered a choice of bliss or hell, the term's of entry are irrelavent - no matter how crazy their rational brain would perceive the deed or set of rules they have to follow, the reward is too alluring to refuse. Those suicide bombers believed that heaven awaited them for their noble actions of killing 1000s of Western infidels. The rational part of their brain would be screaming "no, that's insane," however because they truly believed that killing those innocent people would get them into heaven, they went to murder with smiles on their faces.

Religion is an incredibly powerful tool for corrupting the soul.

You need to look at it in terms of natural consequences. God is letting you know what you need to do to have eternal life, and the consequence of not following down that road.

If I told you that putting your hand in the fire will burn you, and you do it and get burned. Did I punish you with the burn? No. If you don't put your hand in the fire and don't get burned, did I reward you with not getting burned? No.

To say God rewards/punishes implies that things could be different. The rules are not arbitrary, they are what they are as a natural extension of God's nature.
The big problem with the bolded is that God just plain hasn't given me the warning. What's more is, he's set things up so that I can't avoid putting my hand in the fire. I know you say he has in fact communicated with me, but ifThe Bible meets my standard of authenticity, I really have to look at all the other (contradictory) religious texts too, so I'm still left to work it out for myself. Since God endowed me with a sense of reason and parents who didn't indoctrinate me, it's inevitable that I would dismiss all religion.

By saying that I have a choice, you are pretending to know my character better than I do, I hope you understand why this is very irritating. I think you're wrong but I'm not going to tell you that your mind works differently to how it does.

You were basically doomed to hell the moment you were born.
