I don't believe in believing.
I'm a fan of evidence.

^When asked, "Don’t all religions teach the same thing? Is it possible to unify them?" the Dalai Lama said:

Quote:
People from different traditions should keep their own, rather than change. However, some Tibetan may prefer Islam, so he can follow it. Some Spanish prefer Buddhism; so follow it. But think about it carefully. Don’t do it for fashion. Some people start Christian, follow Islam, then Buddhism, then nothing.

In the United States I have seen people who embrace Buddhism and change their clothes! Like the New Age. They take something Hindu, something Buddhist, something, something… That is not healthy.

For individual practitioners, having one truth, one religion, is very important. Several truths, several religions, is contradictory.

I am Buddhist. Therefore, Buddhism is the only truth for me, the only religion. To my Christian friend, Christianity is the only truth, the only religion. To my Muslim friend, Islam is the only truth, the only religion. In the meantime, I respect and admire my Christian friend and my Muslim friend. If by unifying you mean mixing, that is impossible; useless.
Hard to imagine anyone saying that without believing all fingers are pointing at the same moon. Do you believe that?

Not interested in a flyby. What I'm asking is if you don't believe such is your belief based more on reason or the veraciousness of a personal experience. And the reason I'm asking is because it seems like those who adhere to a "me and Thou" or personal religious belief are far less likely to agree with the him than those who believe ultimate reality is basically person-less or non-dual.

The ONLY people who believe that all religions "basically teach the same thing" are people who are ignorant of religions other than their own.

A Religious Studies professor would never say "All religions basically teach the same thing" any more than a Philosophy professor would say that "all philosophical systems basically teach the same thing."

If you ever hear someone say, "Science is about reason, while religion is about faith" (or words to that effect), you can know for sure that the claimant is manifestly ignorant about science or about religion (probably both).

Yes.
I am oversimplifying and being deliberately pithy given the venue.
However, there is no denying the foundation upon which science advances is objective evidence that is assembled and verified by experiment.

That's all I'm going to say.

To my knowledge, NOBODY in this Forum has ever denied the bolded, which is why you bringing it up is more puzzling than pithy (in my opinion).

Pithiness is not a requirement of this forum. In some ways, I think it should be frowned upon as it allows people to hide behind their shallow thoughts.

Okay. That's not a thing that's in question. You stated:

Your statement equating "science" and "evidence" doesn't really address your central claim. It's not at all obvious that you've enhanced your position in any meaningful way.

This makes one question why you even bothered posting at all. Maybe you feel better about yourself now having made a mostly empty statement and useless pithy claim? That's nice.
