Whether they are suggestive or actually happen, is not for me to judge.
We also have an altered state of consciousness that all healthy humans experience, sleep, where almost everyone experience strange phenomena by dreaming.
And while some might use dreams as evidence of mystical, spiritual, religious or other esoteric phenomena, even among those very few would claim that what happens in dreams actually happens.
What is at least undisputed and understood is that the brain is more than capable of on its own to produce what appears to be sensory experience , and it can do so convincingly and vividly.
Personally I do not find the spiritual interpretation of sensations experienced during altered states of consciousness very compelling. It seems more like using thunder as evidence of gods riding their chariots in the sky than anything else. Iow. a pretty story, but not a good explanation.
