Apparently the Dalai Lama has stated that electric
prayer wheels work just as good as the manual ones. His Holiness didn't stop there though and stated that the animated gif image prayer wheels that a person may see on certain websites are also fully functional. Not being done the earthly incarnation of
Chenrezig (in Tibetan, Avalokitesvara in Sanskrit) stated that any computer that has a mantra saved on its hard drive, then functions as a prayer wheel and sends out the energy from the mantra.
I see no reason why the RGT forum on 2+2 shouldn't get in on this action.
Om Mani Padme Hum
Literally translated the mantra means something like "O, the Jewel Lotus!" This is the mantra of Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of compassion.
So the old school prayers wheels were hollow cylinders and they would pack as many mantras written on papers as they could inside, the more the better. And spinning the prayer wheel was to have the same effect as chanting the mantra - you are sending out the "good" vibrations as it were. The more mantras in the wheel, the stronger the vibrations you send out. Now, with all the digital stuff, it has become common to use electronic means and get as many mantras as you can into whatever it is (in Tibetan Buddhism they also fill statues of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, though in a little different manner). Today I came across a
site where they used DVDs and made prayer wheels with 84,348,750,000 mantra.
I mean think about it - an accomplished meditator may take a full 80 year life to say 100,000,000 million mantras. In just a few spins you have generated the mantras and merit of several lifetimes! Awesome.
These folks also have prayer wheels, though they don't seem to contain as many mantras - don't know whats up with that, perhaps they aren't using the same compression technology.
