Just saw the new Jim Jefferies DVD "Alcoholocaust"....It's hilarious BTW

He brings up a point I never really thought about before.

In the bible how come there is no mention of the earth being round? If the bible is written by God using the hand of man, why not mention it?

Such inquiries about content selection are generally addressed to the author of the work in question, rather than asking readers to speculate. In this case, we can at least say that reference to the overall shape of the planet was obviously not essential to the intended message of the Bible.

The earth is called a circle or sphere in Isaiah.....

Isa 40:22 [It is] he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof [are] as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

The hebrew word for circle, means a circle or sphere, its used of the arch or vault of heaven.

As far as I know, anyone can figure out that a circle is round?

Interesting.

So the idea the Earth was round has been generally accepted by the church since the bible was written? I have never heard that before.

I thought the Church was firmly against astrology.

Expected Pletho response:

Early Christians who divided the word correctly would have realized the Earth was round. The early church became corrupt shortly with it's evil bishops and priests and deacons and taught the Earth was round.

The earth was commonly thought of as an upside down bowl shape, though the ancient Greeks came up with the idea of the sphere from 6th century BC and basically confirmed it in the 3rd century BC including measuring the circumference of it pretty accurately. That we know of anyway. It is thought that it was known much earlier, especially from seafaring with relatively high speeds and the travel towards the horizon pretty much shows a curvature, though whether they thought it went all the way round or whether it was bowl like and at what point they paradigm changed is pretty much unknown.

In any case its certainly a myth that Columbus "discovered" the earth was spherical and its not impossible Isaiah meant spherical when he said round, but id bet against it personally.

It seems pretty irrelevant that this is not mentioned.

It also didn't mention that stars are comprised mainly of hydrogen and helium or that whales live in the ocean or that football would be invented. We could list a million things that God theoretically created to be as they are, and that are also not mentioned in the bible, but this does not make the bible any more or less legitimate.

If someone in 1600 BC wrote that stars were made of mostly hydrogen and listed Pi to 1000 decimal places id be much more convinced of it being "written by god through man" than i do now.

Id also take 5 sets of gold plates written in the 5 major languages of today with an undeniable record of the life of Jesus and a list of which bits of the old testament to ignore too. That would be pretty convincing.

No No god knows what he is doing. Different interpretation and we cannot understand because we are too inferior to his greatness
