People here may be interested...

People here are basically shrugging and labelling him an idiot. I was surprised to hear that he may lose his job. I would have assumed he was safe from anything like that. It was buried quite late in the news, though it did make most stations.

Funny how this has lingered in the news and longer and had more coverage then any of the molestation cases.

Australia doesnt have nearly the same protections of free speech as the US does.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_sp...s_in_Australia

He is in Queensland, which apparently has laws similar to Tasmania, which are:
Quote:
A person, by a public act, must not incite hatred towards, serious contempt for, or severe ridicule of, a person or a group of persons on the ground of –
(a) the race of the person or any member of the group; or
(b) any disability of the person or any member of the group; or
(c) the sexual orientation or lawful sexual activity of the person or any member of the group; or
(d) the religious belief or affiliation or religious activity of the person or any member of the group.
The UK almost passed similar legislation a few years ago, luckily Labour was stopped in time, and a lot of Europe has it too.

I like this phraseology, though I would replace "person" with "broadcaster" and make it part of the terms of a license to use the public airwaves.

This would put a stop to the news media's participation in these provocative publicity stunts which everyone knows to incite terrorist evil-doers.

Theoretically would you be in favour of A through C as well?

I don't know really, whether they are enshrined in laws or not - people seem to be able to say much more here than in the US without arousing controversy (you can burn the flag for instance). Irrespective, we don't usually fire people for what they say - our unfair dismissal laws are tougher than yours.

Anyhow - I doubt he'll actually lose his job. I was surprised enough it was even discussed as a possibility.

I think he is referring to the burn koran event that was cancelled, not this particular incident.

Dont quote me on this but I am pretty sure it was going down before the weekend or on Saturday. The backlash happened on Sunday or Monday night. I swear I havent been smoking anything lol But It didnt happen on monday.

Edit. I must be high or something becasue i went back through the news and it did happen Monday. Oh well it was still a good opportunity to poke fun at the church. At least you cant loose a job you dont have!
