Unknown vandals unhappy about atheists’ billboard in Charlotte, N.C., spray-painted “Under God” on the ad, the city’s atheist association discovered Monday. The defaced message will remain in place until after July 4, the group reports, which is the soonest that workers can furnish a fresh billboard image.

The billboard reads, “One Nation Indivisible,” which is the phrase preceding the 1954 insertion of the words “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance, reports the Charlotte Observer’s Tim Funk. The billboard was erected on Billy Graham Parkway last week. (Graham is, of course, the state’s famous evangelical preacher.)

Here are some other defacements of atheist billboards

A billboard exists in San Diego, people claim to be offended by it.

Because all religions are the same. The atheist religion is no different.

Why use words if you're going to have your own meaning for them?

IMO one of the strongest arguments for organized religion (its usefulness, not its truth) is that it can build a strong sense of community. These billboards are part of an attempt to build that sort of community structure but in a secular way.

Why not call a spade a spade? Do you really not see how people like this that put up billboards are no different then organized religion?

This is hardly a group of people that just don't think that their is enough information to conclude whether there is a God or not. Or that the issue of God's existence is underdetermined.

Do you make the same argument about a-astrologers?
That being an a-astrologerputs you in a discernible group with the same characteristics as astrologers?

Or,
" The Aliens are Coming" crowd.
If a group were to put up a sign, "don't worry, the Aliens aren't coming" would you also say they share the same characteristics as the "Coming" crowd?

Consistency of analysis is beneficial.

Maybe for the same reason some of them post here.

Social influence campaigning is no job for the impromptu amateur.

Again, the word religion actually means something to most people. Call it a group or an organization or something. People that share beliefs or interests getting together to share ideas is not religion.

Really? Because I'm pretty sure all most of the signs say is that there are others who don't believe in God.

Edit: First sign I forgot about and is an exception.

Why the hell are so called religious/holy people defacing someone else's property?

So envious over non-believers?

Have so much hatred for other people and there way of life? Isn't it a sin to hate? Ok in there heads god hates gay people are these so called Christians putting themselves at the same level of there God? Isn't that pretty much a huge sin to say you are at the same level as God.

I have a believe that all these crazy fundamentalist Christians will be making a trip to hell when they die.

And if these people are going to heaven I really don't wanna go to heaven when I die. Screw that I'd rather be in purgatory with all the other non believers, than have to spend an eternity with a bunch of Christians and other religious fanatics. All they would do is rub it in my face that there is a God and a heaven.

Although I do think the whole organized atheist thing is pretty ******ed. I've heard of groups actually meeting on Sunday morning like it was church. WTF is that all about?

It's political. We want rationalists to have representation in government. Also, most atheists have no idea how many other atheists there are.

Either way, atheism is certainly not a religion or anything like it.

"Atheism" isn't a religion but "militant atheism" is. Have you ever wondered what militant atheism looks like?

Give up?

Spoiler:

i agree. in order for something to be correctly categorized as religion, it needs to have a lot of negative qualities, and very few redeeming ones.

atheism on its own isnt awful enough to be a religion.

The defacing is excellent. Politically it's one of the best outcomes one could hope for.

Actually without the defacement the campaign seemed kinda stupid and religious, but now it seems like a very necessary message. Good stuff.
