I'm not worried about the magnitude of the downswing, I'm worried about the speed. 450BB down over 1000 hands is pretty unlikely, at least according to my math. Running with a 10BB/100 win-rate and a 50bb/100 standard deviation the results are less than 1/1000.
I am bankrolling players with my own account, so it is effectively unlimited at this level ($100,000+). I'm mostly interested in making a sound business decision.
I asked him to move down to $0.50/$1 last night and he is up about $250, so hopefully he can pull out of it.
Again, thanks for the advice guys. I am new to this and I really appreciate it.
In my experience, typical poker math doesn't translate well to live since it is so slow and they the dynamic is very different. In online, where 1k hands can take an hour or less, losing 5BI is most likely tilt and poor playing. In live, that can be more than one session and a moderate amount of bad luck / coolers.
