the biggest problem in my life rn is i can't decide which patek i should buy.

the 5146g has luminous hands, which i like. it's got the moonphase, which is neat. and it has date and day and month, it's got it all.


the 5212a calatrava has the hands of a dress watch, and it's all about central hands, just the date complication, everything else is running off that central point, telling me days months, and kinda uselessly counting the weeks. it's a little autistic, but i like it maybe because i am a little autistic myself.


the feel, for me the overall vibe of the 5212a is that it's a thinking man's watch. and the 5146g is more for a gentleman of leisure. but who am i? i like to think i'm a thinking man but if i'm being honest with myself i think i'm more of a gentleman of leisure

It's to show off that this mechanical device CAN track months. But it's funny to imagine the lifestyle this watch is geared to is so leisurely that the wearer can find months of time melting away unnoticed

the difference between an annual calendar and a perpetual calendar is about $40,000, at patek philippe or a lange & sohne. an especially good annual calendar can distinguish between 30-day and 31-day months and adjust accordingly. but even the best annual calendars count february as 30 days, so you have to change the date manually 1-5 times a year, depending on how sophisticated the annual calendar mechanism is.

but a perpetual calendar has a mechanism built such that it recognizes which months have as many days, and will make the leap from february 28th to march 1st. AS WELL AS track leap years so it knows which years it can send february 28th to february 29th before jumping to march 1.

the only time a perpetual calendar needs to be manually adjusted is on years that end in 00. so 2100 there's no leap day, so you manually adjust it from feb 29 to march 1. but after that you don't have to adjust it for another 200 years, because 2200 is a rare exception to the 00 rule.

and in my mind, having something with so little responsibility on my end, one manual action required over the next 278 years.. that is the peak of luxury
