I'm going to get into hiking this summer. Looking and comparing gear has been my hobby the last week or so. This is what I got for the "Big 3" (or 4 if you include a sleeping pad which I do):

It can! I'm going to start out with just an easy overnight. Then expand from there. Just hiking around with everything you need for a week on your back what could be nicer than that? I have a week planned for Isle Royale this summer so I want to do a couple smaller hikes before that.

iirc lowercasecaps (rip) went on hikes of thousands of kilometers. Also, there was a 2p2er whose name I'm forgetting that biked the length of Africa (north to south).

When getting a sleeping bag I decided to go a little bit lighter but also get a pretty good sleeping bag liner (Termolite Reactor by Sea to Summit). This way I can go heavy when it'll be especially cold but otherwise stay relatively light.

I've done 2 nights & 3 days. Very easy though. Hiked in about 2 kilometers with way too much ****. Set up camp and hung out all weekend. Hiked back out.

When I was 15 as part of a program for juvenile delinquency I did outward bound for 28 days in North Carolina. The part where Georgia , South Carolina, and North Carolina touch each other is the most beautiful land on the entire eastern half of the USA. But yes! I hiked the Appalachian trail for 28 days in those three states and slept in A bear sanctuary.
