I was thinking about that speech Nigel Farage gave at the EU Parliament a few years ago.

He waffled on about how citizens of countries within the EU didn’t want closer european ties, and they didn’t see themselves as “European”.

He said people identify as a citizen of their country. Then he said the only exception might be Belgium. He said it was because Belgium isn’t a real nation. You’re a mix of a few different peoples, and speak different languages. So therefore you don’t see yourselves as Belgianinians or whatever. So you’re more likely to identify as european.

I’ve always chucked at that speech, and at how stupid Nigel is. It’s like he doesn’t realise the exact same logic could be applied to the United Kingdom. A “nation” that is literally made up of multiple countries, who don’t really like each other.
