It inflates poast count, which I believe is mostly fluff but, some people use it as a gauge as to how long a member has been active and may trust them more than they should.

Also, it boosts poasts within a given thread. Now that I am green I look at as many threads as I can but, when I was just a reg, I'd be more selective of what threads I entered and looking at the number of replies is one way of seeing if a thread is any good. By weeding out the double and triple post nonsense.. the end result is a more transparent and true description of thread activity.
