I took french from gr 5 - gr 13 and then first year university. I stopped b/c uni french was terrible. just lots of grammer. The prof would make us read passage from Balzac and other great French writers and cream his pants talking about how beautiful their language was. Then we'd have to construct passages that used identical grammatical structures.
So we'd get something like

and then we'd have to come up with our own version that used the exact same grammatical structure but expressing our own ideas. That was not a lot of fun and didn't seem very useful, but I guess French in uni is French Literature, and not how to speak and understand French.
