So the rental agreement I'm about to sign has this on the bottom:

"ANY PERSON OR FIRM IS AUTHORIZED TO RELEASE INFORMATION ABOUT THE UNDERSIGNED UPON PRESENTATION OF THIS FORM OR A PHOTOCOPY OF THIS FORM AT ANY TIME"

Am I wrong to think that's unnecessarily broad?

You are not wrong, but I'd ask under what circumstances they'd invoke that. They probably want it to check employment status/credit. If they show up at your lawyer or doctor and try to get confidential info released with that clause, they're just going to be lol'd at.

Here it's illegal to require your Social Insurance # (same as Soc Sec #) but I've had landlords ask for it and I give it to them because if I don't, then they can't do credit check and I don't get the place and I guess I could fight them in court or something, but w/e. I'd still sign a lease with something like that if I wanted the place.

On the whole, I think this nsa revelation is the "biggest" at least in my mind

There's different levels of encryption. And I'd always heard anecdotally that the highest level was, "pretty much only the NSA would ever be able to crack this and they don't care enough to put the time in for w/e stupid thing you're encrypting."

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking ... It's just like jfc how did we get to the place where stuff like this is standard?

Here there are lots of clauses that landlords put in leases that are illegal and unenforceable (like no pets, no children etc) and so you just sign the lease and ignore the clause and there's nothing landlord can do. I don't get why they bother putting stuff like that in leases, but they do. Obv what they want you to sign is more troubling, but jfc, like if someone showed up at your work and asked for one of your clients' financial info with that as consent, is there any chance you don't tell them to gtfo, or at least call the client to confirm.

well ldo im not shocked they can decrypt. Im shocked that they basically teamed up.with or subverted vroad internet security and encryption protocols. NSA still can't brute force beyond a certain level of enccryption still. **** tho man this is bull**** to read in places like the guardian
