The Air Force told me that I could exchange my Euro for USD with them, so I did. And they completely ****ed me in the ass on the exchange. 15% ****ing vig.

I knew they'd charge a fee, but I didn't think it would be that bad. That's pretty terrible, right? The ****ing ATM's don't even skim that much.

What about your experience with the AF thus far would lead you to believe that would even remotely be a good idea?

1) While I was deployed, they exchanged money with 0% vig. It was a pretty sweet deal.

2) I was told about the service by someone I trust, and so I didn't even think to look into it. My bad, obviously.

It only cost me like $60, so it's not that big a deal. Compared to, say, the $300/month they take out of my paycheck to pay for the chow hall I never eat at.

And the biggest deal thus far is the $1200 that they essentially stole from 90+% of the kids at Basic Training (including me) by lying to us about how the G.I. Bill works and telling us that we have to sign this paper RIGHT NOW or we'll never get any G.I. Bill money. They of course do this at basic training intentionally, since that way they can make sure that we're not able to go online or call people to research whether they're actually telling us the truth.

Wow, pretty sick trap actually.

FUN FACT: I used some of that local currency to buy a ticket to see The Hobbit that cost the equivalent of US$25. Worst Christmas ever.

The short version is this: There are two kinds of G.I. Bill you can choose from: The Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, and the Montgomery G.I. Bill. I'll call them 9/11 and MGIB.

9/11 costs nothing to the member, and has better benefits.* MGIB costs $100/month for you first year in, and has worse benefits. At Basic Training, we all sat through a brief where they lied about the benefits each offered. Basically, they took all the 9/11 benefits and described them as being MGIB benefits, and vice versa. So we all thought the MGIB had better benefits, even though that's not true.

They then told us that if we wanted the MGIB, we had to sign up right then and there and would never have another chance. I don't know if that part was true or not.

Now this is basic training, where we have zero contact with the outside world, or else I'd've Googled that ****. But that wasn't an option, so we basically all signed up for the MGIB, and they took $1200 from us during our first year.

I've since switched over to the 9/11, but I don't get my $1200 back.


*This is subjective, but virtually everyone I know prefers the 9/11 bennies to the MGIB bennies.
