EC takes up ASCTEG frontier complaint
The European Commission has said it will ask Spain to clarify the need for stringent checks at the La Línea/Gibraltar frontier. This follows a complaint by the Spanish workers in Gibraltar group, ASCTEG, dated the 23rd December last year.
In its reply, the Commission explains that Gibraltar is not part of the Schengen Area, and neither is it part of the customs territory of the Union. For these reasons Spain is entitled to carry out border checks. It highlights that the Commission does not routinely monitor the checks, but adds that following complaints received from citizens pointing out difficulties when crossing the border, it will contact the Spanish Authorities to request clarifications. The Commission tells ASCTEG Chairman, Juan José Uceda, that he’ll be informed about the result of this exchange in due time.
