Plus, a big part of why our electoral system is so messed up is that we had a very small population in a very large country in the beginning and a very slow system of communication.

Electoral college made a ton of sense then. But, you have to have a constitutional amendment to change it which requires a super-majority and many states would never ever have anyone court their votes again. Ever. So, that ain't gonna happen.

The election of Senators was changed to direct elections because that feature did not apply.
