Smith machine is WOAT ainec. Your body doesn't naturally move in a single, fixed plane and the Smith machine is just a good way to get injured or create bad habits you must fix later on.

Hello AngryPanda.

I'm just starting out at a humble gym without much help, instruction, or variety of equipment. I like it because it's quiet and very close to me so I will go.

I'm sure I will outgrow what I have going on now, but I just want to establish going at all and working hard.

There is this elderly lady, (maybe 80?) who wears a dress shirt and dress pants and sits on the recumbent bike and kind of occasionally pedals while she reads! I think she just likes to get out of the house.

Getting out of the house is a huge reason for me to train imo. Otherwise, I'd just be in my apartment as soon as I got home from work and I'd just sit there.
