That's how it actually works, at least in Kentucky. People in Kentucky will actually listen to any crazy kook who actually bothers to gather enough signatures to get on the ballot. They won't vote for the kook, but they'll listen to him. Then they go to the non-kooks and say "Tell us why you disagree with the kook." The election process in Kentucky is among the least-broken least-rigged in the country.
Besides, I am know by enough Kentucky political and media types that I would be taken at least sort of seriously. If a guy who rides a mechanical bull around the state can get invited to the gubernatorial debates and ask the governor questions face-to-face, I can get an op-ed published in the Lexington Herald-Leader imo.
