I have no idea, but worldwide production is over 22,200 tons per year, so I doubt an extra 1% will change things much.

also, silver was only $26 if you could actually BUY it at that price, which you obviously couldn't because physical silver costs more than that.
But you could have gone long on silver paper, until prices goes up and you can get physical for not much more than the spot.

Anyone in Orange County or LA want to buy a 1oz Maple for $40 over spot? Willing to meet at Hawaiian Gardens. PM for info.

Looks like we've settled around the area from right before the U.S. debt downgrade by S&P. Quite a ride imo.

the right strategy now IMO is to buy some dollars and gold. Buy dollars against AUD, CAD, and NZD. If we are in a debt deflation there is no way to avoid dollar strength until the Fed gets more active but gold will still do well in terms of other currencies.

Anybody here think the US is going to slow the pace of debt issuance?
10-02-2011 , 07:14 PM
Nope. But if private sector/bank/shadow bank leverage falls faster than Uncle Sam can spend, we still have a net decline in total debt or debt deflation. I'm with Zygote that I see a weird paradigm where in the short term the dollar rallies and gold holds its own. It's why I've been a firm believer that you have to hold both Au and USD--it's bad strategery standing too close to one side of the boat imo.

Oh, I agree completely. Was just making a long term point re: gold.

Remember, circa 2008 gold basically bounced around sideways almost 2 years.

Decent gold pop to the mid-1650s right now. Gold is now trading almost a full $140 north of platinum.

My GLD call/SPY put straddle went positive yesterday! Not by much but way better than the 40%+ down that it was right off the bat.

smart people,

any thoughts on investing in silver now?
10-22-2011 , 01:51 PM
What's your timeline?
10-22-2011 , 03:53 PM
if you are talking to me idk what that question means.
10-22-2011 , 03:57 PM
Are you trying to make a profitable investment over the next week? month? 6 months? 10 years?
10-22-2011 , 04:16 PM
that's a good question. i think i'm looking at it as mostly a way to make profit in the short term - eg, buy now before QE3 is announced and then sell at a certain point - 6 months to a year is a good estimate for me.

I refrain from making any prediction as to what will happen in the next year.
