So unless this rec rich aggro player is some sicko that knows how to overbet merge, I think we can agree he's either betting the 79 straight or the 4x straight, and thus is not probably bluffing here with two pair or anything, and our set of 88 plays like AA, or any overpair for the matter. We have to call $5k to win (5000+5000+1770), meaning we have to be right 5000/11770 of the time to break even (=42.4%). That means we have to be right a **** load of the time. Also, his calling range preflop has a lot of 4x in it from his image described. Also, does villain realize that he 3xed the pot OTR, which is a humongous overbet? Does he range differ if he 2xed vs 3xed it? I think it's a lay down for sure. Also, why pick spots like this if hes an aggro rich dude, pick better ones. Don't have to be worried about being exploited against players like this

Talking with him gave you a massive edge to correctly call a bluff. It's fine whenever you want to do it.

Whether it comes across well, or like you're being a dick is a little different. It's a skill, like most in poker. Sometimes it's worth letting your opponent hate you for a bit when it's huge like this.

In my experience, a 2.5x turn raise from a recreational player usually is a big hand. A sophisticated pro may take this sizing as a turn semi-bluff to setup a river bluff. I don't see him taking this sizing with 79, I think if he wanted to bluff the turn, he would go bigger. I think we see 45 here a lot. And in his mind when the river runs out with a 4 liner, he thinks that if you think he's bluffing you'll call an overbet as often as a pot sized bet. So I would just fold here, he's trying to level you.

I think this is clearly a fold without the info. I think it's a case where we're perceived to want to call lightly so he's never bluffing, but could be expanding the range more than a reasonable person might bet. Good call to talk to the villain, wp.

I can see flatting the turn as better, but I don't think 3betting is bad either. He clearly overplays hand and may do so in that spot. It depends on your read in that exact frequency but I find it hard to believe that someone who may bet 5k for value with 23 on the river won't overplay turns enough for 3betting to be profitable.

Gross spot, he probably puts you on overpairs, and you beat all his air , two pair and sets ( which he probably could bet all these the same way) which means you lose to only a few straight combos and beat alot else, sick sizing but I think we go ahead and call, if you have seen him make this large overbet with value before then perhaps lead towards folding, very tough spot though imo, could go either way,

Solid bump, super sick hand. I think given his massive overbet that talking to him is a good idea ...rec players can give away a lot when you ask the right questions. I probably would have folded but you're a fearless beast so nh, bro.

Our old friend MDF says we need to be calling 26% of our range that gets to the river. Since we don't know what his strategy is with this sizing, can't we just fall back on this and try to catch a crazy bluff?

I'd assume 88 would be in that top 26% since I figure OP will be bet calling v this villain with like A8s+.
