Villian raises UTG to $40. V is very loose and I've seen him call a $200 bet on the flop and $400 bet on turn with only a ten high flush draw. (he checked the river when the flush didn't hit). My image is somewhere in between TAG/Nit and V knows this. V has about $5K behind and I have him covered

I'm on the button with AJ and I 3 bet to $160. V calls.

($335 pot) flop is Axx with two spades. V checks and I bet $300. V calls.

($935 pot) turn is blank. There are no straight draws. V Checks and I bet $800. V calls

($2,535 pot) river is blank. V checks and I check back. V shows AK.

Did I play this wrong? Was I too agressive preflop with the AJ OTB?

Flop bet is too big.

Turn sizing is ok in relation to the pot, but if you go smaller on the flop, you save yourself a couple hundred bucks.

Line seems ok.

With your image, checking turn to call almost all rivers might be better.

I don’t think we always have to 3b AJ on the button against UTG open. Agree that we can/should bet flop much smaller

You’re confusing postflop looseness with preflop looseness. I’m folding this pre. A lot of bad Vs still have tight opening ranges pre especially utg. AJ just does so poorly against most utg opens.

Preflop: Unsure why we're three betting here, especially in position. You have a hand that doesn't play well against an UTG open in general. As dumbos said above, I MIGHT fold pre, but since I have the button much more inclined to a call.

Flop: Bet sizing is too large. When V calls here, his range is super polarized. At the very least a better ace, or a flush draw. In either case, betting smaller does two things: Gets you value out of his flush draws, and keeps the pot smaller in case you're hosed.

Turn: Again, why are we betting so much? You fold out all the hands you can get value from and keep in the ones you can't. If this guy is folding top top here, he's scared money. Your line wouldn't make sense to me here. If you had the hand you're representing, you would want to be getting value, not blowing an opponent out of the pot.

River: Check back is non disputable. Anything else would be spew.

You also didn't mention whether you had a spade in your hand. Seems relevant if you think he has a fd when he calls your ridiculous sizing twice.

Preflop is mostly a call imo, can sqz in some 25% 3b
Flop sizing is huge and unnecessary.
