But for now, right or wrong, I wanna try the voluntary donations route. I wanna force people who enjoy 15-20 hours of content a month to take 30 seconds a month on toss a fiver in the Internet tip jar.

It's idealistic and paternalistic as hell, I know. But I'm an idealist. And I'm a dad!

Two thoughts:

1. You've mentioned self sabotaging behavior in the past. I know your idealistic when it comes to the paypal vs recurring donations but could any of your resistance also be a form of self sabotage in not believing that what you put out is worth people supporting on an ongoing basis?

2. One time vs recurring support isn't mutually exclusive. A lot of ppl are saying they want Patreon. Why not put up PayPal and Patreon and let the market decide?

Nah. I think the pod is good as hell. Raw--and with much room for improvement, but good as hell. It entertains me/takes my mind away when I listen, and many others have said the same.

There is a chance my deep-rooted self-destructive nature is at work here (in not just adding Patreon). I don't think so though. I lead a very examined life these days (one of the benefits of hitting rock bottom and being stuck there for a while). I think it's something else.

1. I think of this as monetizing my content--not turning it into a business. In a business, of course, do everything the customer wants. This is content though, art. The moment it becomes a business the authenticity/rawness of it takes a big hit imo. And that just ain't me.

2. I am beyond busy and don't know that I can get out the proper amount of episodes out each month. I'm a partially homeless, constantly traveling dad of 2 with multiple jobs and projects. Also, solid chance I bust again and can't even play. Getting monthly fees while not putting out the right amount of content is too gross for me. I can't do it.

3. It's a story. Sometimes there are going to be clusters of episodes, sometimes there are going to be breaks. That's just how it is when you've been in the game as long as I have/are my age/have so much going on.

4. **** The Man. Seriously. Just about every business model out there is predatory and/or sneaky ("we can get this", "they will forget about this", etc). Not only will I never go that route, but I also really believe in the long-term effect of just having the utmost integrity all the time, without ever wavering. Even in business, or whatever this is...

5. I think forcing people to reciprocate with whatever they feel is right/fair whenever they feel they should do it, is worth the backlash. People who have the feeling that they need to be communal all the time are the STONE COLD NUTS imo. I like that I can kind of force this habit a little, even if it's at my expense financially.

I feel like there is a good amount of anxiety from the communal folk out there that they won't reciprocate if the traditional method isn't available. I have way more faith in them than that though. I believe it's just that--anxiety.

And I don't think taking 30 seconds out of your day once a month (if you go that route) or year (the route I would prob go) is such a nuisance. If it is, then I'm sorry, I don't know what to say. We are talking about reciprocating efforts here, not an exchange of money for services or goods. And I put everything I have over like 200 hours/month into my content.

Lastly, I kind of feel like you guys like me for who I am but also want me to be someone I'm not. That's as frustrating for me as not having a subscription method available to you is, I'm sure.
